Dave Smith Pro 2

The Pro 2 from Dave Smith is widely considered his most powerful mono synth. With the warmth and presence of analog filters and VCAs and the precision of digital clocks and oscillator sync, this hybrid synthesizer has everything one needs to make a huge sounding synth without the drift and instability of analog oscillators. It has a built in step sequencer and delay, turning the Pro 2 into a miniature workstation. 

Two filters are present on the Pro 2, a 4-pole lowpass filter inspired by the original Prophet 5 filter, as well as a state-variable SEM style filter inspired by Tom Oberheim, which can switch between lowpass, bandpass, highpass, and notch filter types. The two filters can be run in series (for variable bandwidth if lowpass and highpass are used creatively together) and in parallel for complex timbres and resonances. 

The sequencer in the Pro 2 is extremely powerful. It has 32 steps on 16 different tracks with real time input, rests and variable length sequences. Synchronizing the Pro 2 to an external MIDI clock or running external audio thru the filter/FX is as simple as plugging in the appropriate cable. 

With the Eurorack Modular community expanding rapidly, the Pro 2 has some patch points for interfacing with modular gear. Four CV outputs and four CV inputs can be assigned to control virtually any part of the synthesizer. Oscillators can be sent dry out of a CV output, as can LFOs, envelopes, making it a wonderful master controller and sound source even when focusing on modular synthesis. 

Because the Pro 2 has two oscillators per voice, (four oscillators total), it is possible to turn the Pro 2 into a Paraphonic synthesizer, meaning it can simulate polyphony. The difference between paraphony and true polyphony is based on the filters and envelopes. In true polyphony, each oscillator (voice) has its own filter, envelope and VCA. In paraphony, the filters and envelopes are shared, but each oscillator can be tuned to a note in the chord. This allows one to play punchy chord, expanding the Pro 2's functionality outside of the "mono synth" category. 

All this with a three and a half octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and aftertouch makes the Pro 2 one of the most powerful synthesizers on the market.
